Boston Mayflower Ltd is a Housing Association (Registered Social Landlord), registered with the Housing Corporation, Registration No. LH 4237.
We are also a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 3773612), which means we have no shareholders. We are a Charity, Registered with the Charities Commission (no. 1078179). We are non-profit making and we are therefore able to use any surpluses generated to the benefit of our tenants. Our Board consists of unpaid volunteers, one-third tenants, one-third Council nominees and one-third independent professional people.
Our funding is supplied by a syndicate of Banks and Building Societies, led by The Royal Bank of Scotland. We have a borrowing facility of £80m. which allows us to both invest in property improvements and to develop new properties to compensate for the effects of sales through the Right to Buy scheme, which continues to be popular.
Whilst our primary and core function is to operate for the well being of our tenants, we also have a commitment to the wider community. Examples include supporting local community groups in a variety of activities aimed at sustainability, and other organisations such as the fledgling Boston Credit Union; in addition to working with other agencies - Social Services, Local Authorities and Health Trusts, etc.
We acknowledge that Private Home owners also have problems with Home Improvements and as such support the Home Improvement Trust
Boston Mayflower began its corporate life in the autumn of 1999, after overcoming the challenge of raising £80 million with which to finance the purchase and improvement of almost 5,000 former council homes.
We promised our tenants that after the purchase of their homes we would improve them to a modern standard, where necessary, over the period of the first five years. The improvements to include a modern kitchen, a modern bathroom, PVCu double-glazing, thermal insulation and central heating. All these improvements are on target to be completed within the five-year period.
We recognise the importance of sustainability and in particular taking our part in limiting climate change and protecting the environment. We have undertaken a full affordable warmth assessment and identified a series of measures to benefit our tenants and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released from our homes. We are currently undertaking a broader environmental assessment looking at our relationship with subjects such as transport, waste and recycling and water. We expect to publish our full environmental report in early 2006.
