Metropolitan Housing Partnership

The Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) is the trading name for a family of successful businesses providing housing, regeneration, and community and support services. The businesses, each with individual identity and strength, represent a wide variety of activities in social housing and cover a large geographic area:

    • Metropolitan Housing Trust
Development and regeneration in London and the Midlands.
    • Metropolitan Home Ownership
Marketing a variety of housing choices including key worker programmes
    • Rushcliffe Homes
Housing Management in the rural Midlands. Home Improvement Agency for South Nottinghamshire.
    • Granta Housing Association
Housing management and development in the East Region.
    • Clapham Park Homes
Community-led RSL for the delivery and management of the regeneration of the Clapham Park Estate.
    • Refugee Housing Association
One of the country's leading providers of housing and support for refugees and asylum seekers.
    • Step Forward
Support and Care Services in London and the Midlands. Home Improvement Agency for Lambeth (London) and Nottingham.
    • Metropolitan Living Limited
The commercial arm of MHP, developing homes for outright sale to the public.

Customers include those in rental accommodation, home buyers, persons receiving care and support services, refugees and asylum seekers. ‘Care and repair’ services are also provided to homeowners in London and South Yorkshire.

Collectively the partnership manages a total of some 22,000 homes in London, the Midlands and the East Region, in some 50 Local Authority areas. It develops an average of 1000 units annually with a turnover of £132 million.

At present with average densities of 40-50 dwellings an acre MHP is building high quality homes with advanced environmental features on brownfield sites in London and the Midlands.

Large social housing organisations such as MHP have environmental impacts resulting from their existing stock, new development and housing management functions. Responsible management of these impacts will contribute to the overall aim of decreasing the effects of climate change and creating sustainable communities.

MHP is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability by the development of an Environmental Sustainability Strategy and ongoing action plan of continuous improvement. It intends to introduce the principles of sustainability across every aspect of the organisation and ensure that they are integrated into ongoing operational and corporate Business Plans.

The Metropolitan Housing Partnership’s Environmental Sustainability Team, based in Cambridge House, Wood Green, London, is responsible for ensuring that staff, customers and stakeholders are consulted in order that the Environmental Sustainability Strategy has maximum effect.

The Strategy will be widely published and made accessible in appropriate formats to ensure maximum exposure. Progress with identified actions will be reported on annually in newsletters and corporate annual reports, together with wider environmental impact reporting using the Environmental Management for Housing matrix which MHP has adopted as its environmental management tool. The matrix, a software based program was developed by Chris Barnett Associates in partnership with the Housing Corporation and is managed by the Environmental Sustainability Team. The Team will ensure that stated targets are met and will measure KPI’s and carry out benchmarking. The Environmental Management System will be audited.

The Environmental Sustainability Strategy Group (the environmental champions group) was formed in 2004 with representatives from all of MHP’s businesses to assist the Sustainability Team in developing and implementing all environmental strategies. Individual champions will act as focal points for staff on environmental sustainability matters in their various business areas.
