Our Responsibilities
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is often described as listening and responding to the needs of a company's stakeholders. This includes the requirements of sustainable development. We believe that building good relationships with employees, suppliers and wider society is the best guarantee of long-term success. This is the backbone of our approach to CSR.
Managing CSR well will allow us to identify potential risks to the Company and respond to areas of performance where we fall behind. More importantly it also means we can identify opportunities to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. CSR can help us to draw shoppers to our stores, attract and retain the best staff, make us a partner of choice with suppliers and create value for our shareholders.
Our approach is built around three principles:
Products
We aim to ensure that what we sell is produced in an ethically and environmentally responsible manner. To do we have to keep sight of the wide range of raw materials, production processes and countries of operation involved. All products have three stages in their 'life':
-
Production - this includes the production of raw materials and manufacturing and is where we can influence our suppliers.
-
Selling - this includes both distribution and selling and is where we have direct control.
-
Usage - this is when products are used by our customers and finally disposed of and is where we have some influence through design and information.
People
By producing, distributing and selling our products and services we create employment opportunities in the UK and overseas. But we want to do more than just provide jobs. We aim to provide a mix of benefits for everyone who works at Marks & Spencer. We also encourage the same approach to employment amongst our suppliers, franchisees and other business partners through our Global Sourcing Principles.
Places
We have obligations to the communities in which we trade. We were founding members of Business in the Community, a charity dedicated to encouraging company's to invest in social improvement, and remain an active member. Successful retailing requires economically healthy and sustainable communities. At the same time, as a major retailer in the UK and Ireland, we provide employment and products and services and often become an important part of the fabric of the high street.
Every year we produce a CSR Report which tells you about the progress we are making. You can READ THIS REPORT here. Your feedback on our corporate social responsibility performance and reporting is important to us. Please help us by taking a few minutes to COMPLETE THIS FEEDBACK FORM.
The INDEX below links you to more information about our approach to CSR and gives you an in-depth look at our policies on social, ethical and environmental issues that guide the way we do business. As almost all of our products are made just for us we can ensure that they are produced carefully, in ways that help protect the environment, the people who make them and our customers.
